BIID incorporates ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) requirements – that is, the criteria used to assess a project’s sustainability, non-financial risks and quality of governance – right from the appraisal and structuring stages of transactions. These criteria are taken into account when assessing risks, defining implementation conditions, evaluating the quality of the deal structure and considering the commitments associated with each project, with a view to placing sustainability at the heart of the investment process.
The risks, mitigation measures, commitments and any identified discrepancies are incorporated into the monitoring of the operation.
Expertise harnessed to ensure the quality of operations
The technical units and experts deployed by BIID examine the ESG issues specific to each project and determine the due diligence, control measures and commitments required for its progress. Their involvement ensures that these requirements are integrated into technical, financial, institutional and operational decisions, depending on the nature, scale and level of risk of the project.
On the environmental front, the expertise focuses in particular on the conservation of natural resources, impact management, climate resilience and the sustainability of the solutions adopted. On the social front, it covers inclusion, working conditions, the effects on local communities and equitable access to opportunities, with particular attention paid to vulnerable groups.
In terms of governance, the BIID ensures the transparency of arrangements, the clarity of responsibilities, the integrity of stakeholders, the traceability of commitments and compliance with applicable requirements. Risks, mitigation measures, commitments and any identified deviations are incorporated into the monitoring of the operation.
This mobilisation of specialist expertise enables BIID to link the ESG quality of projects to their viability and long-term impact, whilst maintaining a requirement for consistency between performance, accountability and sustainability.
